Space Combat
Hopes and suggestions from Community for the Swtor space system.

I believe that the space system in SWTOR should have more depth. Space travel and space battles were a integral part of the movies and the overall Star Wars experience. I understand that this game primarily focuses on combat on the ground, but Bioware & LucasArts are afforded the opportunity to create the ultimate Star Wars game by adding complexity to the space system.
I've seen space-travel games, and planetside games, but to really immerse a player in a fictional universe, I'd like to see a game that implements both to a satisfactory degree. I'm eager to see just how far the developers of Star Wars: The Old Republic take it- I acknowledge that there is a healthy amount of speculation in my post, but I feel that if the space mechanic was any more sophisticated, we would have heard about it by now.
The devs have said that each player will be able to purchase a ship at some point (each class seems to be associated with their own specific ship). The space system will be split into two major pieces: travel and combat. I would like players to be able to build/buy/upgrade their own ships, to make them unique from one another, and to really create a relationship between the player and his ship, a la Han and the Millenium Falcon.
From what I've gathered, the combat seems to be exclusively available in missions, where the player will be "on-rails". They are able to move freely, but only within a small "pipe", dictated by a camera which moves automatically.
Space combat = Starfox 64?

Swtor.gr: we liked the Tarka's Opinion
Quote:
You make a good point. No other "minigame" has been given this much media focus in interviews, magazines, etc. That is what makes this whole situation contradictory. On the one hand they talk about it being a minigame, whilst on the other allow magazines to plaster it all over the front covers, multi-page interview spreads and save the announcement for exhibitions. In short, they are marketing space combat as if it was a major feature. Which can end up disappointing people when they find out that it has all the depth of a teaspoon.
Had Bioware just mentioned in the forums "yes, the game has space combat but don't expect anything massive" and not bothered saving it for exhibitions and not had interviews specifically on the subject, then perhaps things may have been different.
The Original Post
Space combat = Starfox 64? - Is it just me or does anybody else think that the current space combat system seems rather ridiculous for an MMO? Space combat appears to be nothing more than a reflex tunnel shooter. When i first heard about space combat, i jumped for joy expecting something like Homeworld, EVE online or even DarkStar One, then i found out it was nothing more than a HD version of StarFox 64.

Space combat oppinion

Space combat oppinion - I just seen the trailor for the space combat for SWTOR and I was disappointed that it is a tunnel fighter sim.
I currently play STO and they have a 360 degrees dogfighting sim.
I really hope the space combat was going to be more 3 dimentional. Not a tunnel shooter,
Although the combat was really fast paced, the abilty to have complete control of your ship is not there at all.
You can only go forward. Sorry but this was a bad choice for your space combat. A major letdown for myself.
I truely hope you don't leave this as your only space combat and put it in as only a brief mission and not actual gameplay as a main form.:jawa_frown: [Swtor.com Community]
Swtor.gr.

Exploring alternative gameplay as DLC

Exploring alternative gameplay as DLC - DLC is so common nowdays that it seems a near given we will see some form of it in TOR, offering side content or some kind of alternative gaming experience which does not interfere with the main game.
In many ways this sounds like it would have been the ideal vehicle for the tunnel space combat system. Short, isolated missions, which have little effect on the rest of the game and are just meant as a diversion (and have caused a rather large division in public opinion). While that is just an academic discussion since tunnels are what we are getting as our space content at release, the topic got me thinking about what further additions to the game could be considered as DLC (vs what would be better saved as expansions).
It would seem that anything that offered particularly quirky gameplay, or offering too different a gaming experience, is not something modern companies want to add post release in a patch or expansion for fear of fracturing the community (as past MMOs have taught us). In these such areas, making the love-it-or-hate-it items DLC instead would seem to make more sense.

New player ship seen!

New player ship seen! - So, with all the anger flying over the way space combat is being handeled, I think we missed something importain. On Page 54 of the PC gamer artical is a ship in an in game screen shot of the tunnel shooter. This ship is not the Vanguard or the Fury, its this ship.
Here is a scan of the page. Also something new, its red, and in the other screen is blue, possible to color our ships?
Also in the mag, there are two concept arts of player sized ships, one look close to the Royal Naboo ship, and another looks like some funcky friegter/blocade runner.
Sorry if this has been noticed, I did a search 5-10 pages back, and a key word search (Yea, that didn't help), but if this has been posted, please lock and redirect, mods. [Swtor.com Community]

"Railed" Space Combat is just the beginning!!

"Railed" Space Combat is just the beginning!! - From what I gather, there is a division between all of us if we like where space combat is going. Even though I am one who would say that im fine with it, I have wondered why they are doing just a small "mini-game" or "turret shooter".
It all makes since to me now that I have read this article that quotes BioWare Austin's Co-Studio Director Gordan Walton. http://darthhater.com/2010/03/12/gdc...mer-retention/
Here are some main point he hits at from his quote in regard to why SWG failed with their space combat and how, I think, they are now handling it in TOR.
"players who were playing the game that we had were not thrilled by us having space -- because they knew it came at the expense of adding more stuff to the stuff they were already playing."

SORRY Mods the Official Thread is drowning comments. SPACE COMBAT = BattleFront 2!

SORRY Mods the Official Thread is drowning comments. SPACE COMBAT = BattleFront 2! -
I Have made some connections, and if you know anything about BF2, you would agree.
Based on the evidence and released information regarding Space Combat in TOR, i have concluded the Best possible most relatable and popular in this communities minds example of, is Battle Front 2.
Think about it:
~ Instanced
~ Capital Ships and/or Support ships/fighters being the target
~ Alternate goals in Space combat: Asteroid Chases, Hit and runs, full on Fireworks show..etc.
~ MANY ships on screen, apparently More so in TOR, great!
~ Bring your Own Diverse Ship
~ And Score Points. Via Shooter.
*** Now I have been on top of the Critical group trying to place some of my frustration up on the board. But This new revelation has totally reverted all my past thoughts.
AND I HOPE IT DOES FOR YOU TOO!

The Official confirmation
"First, thank you to all of you who participated in our Comic-Con Reveal mission! While we didn't quite make the numbers, we definitely saw how excited the community is about this and how everyone came together. After all of that, there's no way we could hold back with our special reveal at Comic-Con!
If you’ve been following the news coming out of the Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ panel at Comic-Con International, you’ve heard the announcement that we will indeed have Space Combat as part of the TOR experience! But what does that mean? Space combat is an alternative gameplay experience to the primary game of storytelling, questing, and ground-based combat. In space combat, you fly your personal ship to various “hot spots” on your galaxy map. From there, you will blast your way through asteroid fields, enemy fighters, frigates, destroyers, and a variety of other obstacles that will evoke memories of some of the great Star Wars™ space battles.
