Principal Lead PvP Designer Gabe Amatangelo answers a few of your questions about Player-vs-Player Combat in The Old Republic.
Q: How important is the PvP community to BioWare ? – Kryptorchid
A: Very important. The Old Republic’s PvP developers are avid gamers and active, long-time members of the MMO PvP community. We hold preservation and growth of the The Old Republic PvP community near and dear to our hearts.
Q: Will there be any kind of arena system? If so, which brackets will it support? - Inquiescent
A: ‘Arena System’ has come to mean two different things depending on the context: Single Elimination PvP game mode and Ranking/Tournament Systems. Whether or not we add that game mode to The Old Republic’s current lineup (domination, assault and bombing run) is TBD. However, one of the top things on our list for post launch is a rated Warzone system where players can form teams, earn team ratings, earn individual ratings, as well as participate in tournaments, etc.
Q: Are there any plans for non-combat forms of PvP, such as Pazaak or Swoop Racing? - RizzoRatchet
A: We are considering, testing and/or developing several things like that. We’ll let you know as soon as we are sure about what we’re going to add.
Pax was amazing.... -
The biggest announcement at the SWTOR panel was about open world PVP. There will be pvp lakes and areas on planets with specific objectives for each faction to try and complete. The best footage of this was on the planet Illum, where one faction had control of a large base (fort) while the opposing faction was trying to destroy it. There was footage of a turret up on the base wall where a player sat down in it and started blasting down at the attackers with big blue beams. They will be inviting ALOT more people to beta so keep checking your e-mails, beta weekends are coming this friday the 2nd.
They specifically addressed the problem of balance issues in open world PVP, where one side outnumbers the other. They said there will be small objectives to complete throughout the battlefield so even if your team is outnumbered, you have a chance to win against a larger force. The same pvp design team that worked on Warhammer Online, is helping to make the pvp and open world objectives in TOR. Thats great news, but I do hope they learned from WAR's mistakes.
They announced open world PVP on Illum, Tatooine, and 2 other planets. I think there will be lots of open world PVP objectives even on some planets which were not mentioned. They only showed the open world objectives on Illum at PAX.

The fact that Swtor references are made to Warhammer Online -
Let's not kid ourselves here. When a Developer calls this Objective-based PvP, I think it's only partly true. 'They're all active at the same time.' It's basically King of the Hill where you need 2/3 to win. Very similar for example to what RIFT did where they have 4 banners around the map you hold to gain points over time. This is almost exactly the same. I have a much BETTER interpretation of what this SHOULD mean, and not what it actually does.
What I picture as Objective-based 'all active at the same time from the start' is much more open and diverse. Give us multiple objectives we can accomplish to 'evolve' the Warfront in favor of us and make other difficult objectives easier.
Now I'll reference 3 games you may or may not know and what they each add to this concept:
Sony announced today that will end SWG mmo on 15 December 2011 . I played SWG for years, and what really made the game for me was it was Star Wars, and had a great community to play with. That is what carried me for so long, and when my community left, the game was done for me. Can't believe it will finally be ended, loved that game.
SWG It was ahead of it's time.
* Player driven economy, crafted goods for the most part superior to looted.
* Open world: GIGANTIC worlds, with random spawns and loot
* Open world PVP: Love it or hate it, port into a crowded city only to see a war taking place
* Player housing/cities: AMAZING...nothing comes close. Create/defend your city!
AND BEST OF ALL: Superior player customization, from appearance to skills/templates, it was truly unique.
The reality is often tough, especially when excise a beloved game that was your companion for many years .
Below is the Whole Announce from Sony :
Dear Star Wars Galaxies™ Community Member,
We write to you today to inform you that on December 15, 2011, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) and LucasArts will end all services (MMO and Trading Card Game) for Star Wars Galaxies (SWG). The shutdown of SWG is a very difficult decision, but SOE and LucasArts have mutually agreed that the end of 2011 is the appropriate time to end the game.
You've all watched Star Wars (well I hope you did..) I read a few developers posts about the cross-faction talk and the said that it's only enabled in the beta, and its highly likely that it will not be in the finished game.
When I heard about that it struck me, being that I'm a heavy PvPer ,i am also and a heavy socialize gamer that use the chat a lot . Maybe if it can be reconsidered being that Bioware/Lucasarts said they want to make this feel like a REAL star wars experience *, Cross-faction talk in swtor should be enabled. It would really add a sense of reality in the game, especially in PvP atmosphere inside the game.
It's used in everquest , and works wonderfully, and it is not used in Aion and that was a reason that pvp in aion sucks a lot ,because you can see that the enemy speaks but you can not read what he writes
Always ,in pvp games ,a bit of QQ chat is like the alas of pvp and many times the qq after pvp is the reason for the mmo gamers to try more to be better in pvp strategy (swtor = startegy ) , armor - weapons and levels
Although I know there are people who don't PVP at all, wouldn't it be easy to just have an option where cross-faction talk can be disabled in Tor due to various reasons of BAD LANGUAGE in cross-faction talk ?
*In every battle with lightsabers in star wras there was a QQ chat between star wars characters !!!!!!!

Yesterday, he answered 13 very interesting questions from Michael Bitton about PvP mechanism in Swtor. We have read the whole Q&A article and we choose the most important informations that we found in these answers.
1. First of all we have confirmation of Open World mmo in both PvP and PvE servers.
2. warzones will be strictly 8 players VS 8 players
3. we will have also dueling fights
4. warzones will be more than two !
5. PvP will be rewarding us with loot, XP, credits
6. Players will take their first steps into PvP at 10 level and this is not different between PVP & PVE servers , but maybe will change after the tests.
7. Right now they are planning for PVE & PVP servers , and they are thinking for RP-PVP servers too ( i disaggree with RP-PVP servers,it's waste of time . they will be the first servers that will be empty or players will choose because there is not available slot inside a PVP server )
8. No WORD about Guild benefits from PVP , like hold a territory ( Grrrr ... i want economic mechanisms between guilds )
9. He introduced Resolve Bar : it is an energy bar that will appear only in PvP and it makes player immune to controlling effects, like stuns , roots , knockback e.t.c. ( i liked that )
10. PvP rewards like PVP tokens, which are called Valor Tokens .which are a currency that you can redeem at certain vendors specifically for PvP loot.
Το ερώτημα είναι καίριο. το παιχνίδι ακολουθεί και αντιγράφει το wow ή θα είναι ένα mmo που θα στηρίζεται στο τεράστιο lore του STAR WARS και απλά θα υλοποιεί κάποια mini games που βρίσκονται και σε άλλα παιχνίδια του ιδίου τύπου ;
Περιμένουμε εκπλήξεις από την bioware και όχι "ξαναζεσταμένο φαγητό" με άλλη εμφάνιση !

What is the end game contents that people really want to see? - What is the end game contents that people really want to see BEFORE RELEASING?
Showing some huge and fearsome boss and people will be satisfied?
Showing some purple uber drops and people will be satisfied?
Showing some battlegrounds or arenas and people will be satisfied?
I think showing bosses or drops are spoilers and I want to figure them out when PLAYING.
PVP is all about balancing and game mechanism, and we wont actual know about them without PLAYING.
That why I dont think showing end game information any important. There are just not so much things really worth to show.
Anyone can tell me that what end game contents that you really want to see at this time, 5 months BEFORE RELEASING? [Swtor.com Community]
The War Effort. Rank, Resources and the liberal use of Propaganda! - Something I really hope that they include in SWTOR is a chance to feel like (if not, actually) effect the the War between the Sith and the Republic. It doesn't have to be the whole game but that conflict seems to be the center of the story and I'd hate to feel like helpless observers , powerless to change its outcome(at least by the end game). There are a few ways I can think of that I feel would, as a player, give me the sense that we could have a real impact on the conflict.
One, Rank. Being able to complete PVP and even PVE quests that could build up our rank in our chosen Faction. If you fight in a PVP match against the enemy and score a victory where you defeated several combatants, that should count towards your rank. Completing a quest for the high command of the Republic or the Imperials, should count towards your next promotion. I do think, unless it is worked into the plot for everyone, players should have to enlist in their Factions military (which would have its own set of advantages and disadvantages to gain points towards raising their rank).
Sharpshooter/Sawbones=PvE, Dirthy Fighting/Scrapper=PvP? - I'm pushing my hypothesis that each Advanced Class has one tree you can make a viable, raid-worthy, pure-Trinity, PvE build out of and a second that focuses mainly on PvP abilities. In my opinion, this fits the descriptions given for the Smuggler ACs and trees perfectly. And also works well for the JC and other classes we know something about.
Of course, this isn't an absolute thing, and lots of interesting Hybrids could be made, especially using the generic tree, Luck for the Smuggler. But I think this is the basic concept Bioware is using: Allow one pure PvE role build per AC, and one PvP focused build. Then you can respec inside your AC and still do different types of content. You can also hybridize the PvE role, and the classes other base PvE role via mixing AC trees and adding in the generic tree. But to get a pure build, one that raiders might demand, you would focus on the pure Trinity tree of your AC.
Here is the argument for the Smuggler Class:
What differentiates a PvP build from a PvE build?
PvE - Focused on sustained high performance in a specific role.
BEYOND STORY - The End Game , What will keep you here 18 months after launch ? -
All stories come to an end.
The developers continually make the comment, "Go back and play another class after you get done with the one your playing."
This to me is very worrying, I mean, What !?! You mean you want me to start over !?!
What if I don't want to play another class ?
After dumping X number of months or years into a Class, going through the grind, and finally getting my character to where I want him. You want me to start over and play some other class from day 1 ? Hanging out with newbies, because all my friends in the class I just left are too high level to group with is not my idea of fun.
Sorry, but No ! Where is the END GAME ?
I want to continue the story of my character and only get better and live out new adventures ! Not quit and start over.
This is the major problem with Theme Park MMOs, at some point the content ends.
Something for everybody, a must read. Involves groups and solo, pvp and pve. -
this is starwars if anything look at it like this
This all being said WARZONES is a GREAT IDEA, heres a way to keep world pvp alive though when people dont want to queue up for Warzones and do solo
WARZONES = WOW and thats all ill keep but wow had no world pvp and ****** guilds who couldn't get any loot, which i was not part of i was in top 5 guild in the world when the first expansion hit we later were like 20 in the US.
this is how you get world pvp
COVERT / OVERT status so i can go to opposite factions city without getting rapped by everyone because everyone is always overt..
Make it so i can go overt to fight ONLY overts
Make it so i can WORLD PVP
WOW HAS NO WORLD PVP AND IT SUCKS HAVING TO DO BGS all the time!!!!
if i wanna go overt as rebel go to theed kill people then go back an hour later as COVERT i should be aloud to do so
ALSO DONT MAKE ANYMORE THEN 4 MAN RAID GROUPS WOW SUCKED FOR THAT REASON SHARING LOOT WITH PEOPLE WHO DONT SHOW UP HALF THE TIME UNTIL ITS 100% FARMED!!
xp in pvp and space confirmed! - straight from daniel erikson.
"we're talking about giving experience points for pvp stuff, for the space game..."
and this obviously implies lowbie pvp, something i've been wondering about.
edit: added the word 'confirmed' to the title to sell more copies. [Swtor.com Community]
