JamesBaldwin: Customer Service Information Request: Network Latency Issues

My name is James Baldwin, and I am a network engineer here at BioWare. We are continuing to look into reports regarding ongoing latency and lag issues within the game. While not all in-game lag issues are caused by network latency, we have experienced several network events in the past weeks which have negatively impacted play experience for some. We are continuing to work with our vendors to investigate ongoing issues as well as identifying end user ISPs who may be experiencing high latency or packet loss.

To help us more quickly identify these issues I am beginning this thread to better organize our network latency investigation.

As a reminder, in the early hours of tomorrow morning (December 22nd), we will be taking both the game servers and SWTOR.com offline for maintenance. This maintenance will begin at 2AM CST (12AM PST / 3AM EST / 8AM GMT / 9AM CET) and is expected to last until 6AM CST (4AM PST / 7AM EST / 12PM GMT / 1PM CET).

Get Ready to Play

After this maintenance period is completed, in order to continue playing Star Wars: The Old Republic you will need to have completed the following steps:

1) Create an account on SWTOR.com (if you have not already done so)

2) Within the 'My Account' section:

  • Complete your contact information
  • Add between three and five security questions on your account
  • Redeem an official Game Product Registration Code (not a pre-order code; see below)
  • Sign up for a subscription or enter a Pre-Paid Game Time Code

Once you have completed all of these steps, you'll be ready to play once the servers come back up. You can complete these steps at any time before the maintenance begins, or afterwards if you prefer. Right now, approximately half of those who played in Early Game Access have completed these steps and are 'ready to play', so we'd encourage all of you to complete these steps as soon as possible.

BioWare Interested in Mac Version of Star Wars: The Old Republic

The chances are pretty good we’ll eventually see a Mac version of the game.

Star Wars: The Old Republic launched at the tail end of December 2011 and is being enjoyed by millions of PC gamers. But what about all the Mac owners left out in the cold? Well, as of right now there are no definitive plans, but BioWare has not turned a complete cold shoulder to OS X owners.

During a recent interview in midtown Manhattan (via Massively), BioWare’s studio heads Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk mentioned that they are fully aware of the outcry for a Mac version of Star Wars: The Old Republic. They also understand the audience desiring such a product is quite large, which would, in turn, result in big money. Therefore, through simple logic, a Mac version of Star Wars: The Old Republic is in the cards, but it’s not something BioWare is ready to fully commit to just yet.

"We know there's a big Mac audience of BioWare fans … we know that's an important and large audience. And we want to serve that audience," said Muzyka. However, Zeschuk followed up that with a simple reply, “I’d say ‘not yet.’”

As of right now, impatient Mac owners can run The Old Republic on their machines using a program such as Parallels or Boot Camp; however, that’s not an optimal setup. So let’s hope somewhere down the road us Mac owners can travel to a galaxy far, far away. On that note, I’ll leave you with one final quote of hope from BioWare’s Zeschuk:

Unpacking the SWTOR boxes: Normal vs Collector's edition

Today we received our actual copy of the SWTOR game! Everyone who pre-ordered the game will get it in their hands in the next couple of days.

As you know, the game comes in two versions: normal edition and collector's edition. We managed to get our hands on both of them, and here's what you'll expect to find inside the boxes:

Nothing special about this game case. It is a normal DVD case with the disks and no manual at all. I was expecting something better from Bioware/EA...





This first image on the left is a normal plastic double-DVD case. .The sticker says: "Official Game Access does not begin until Dec. 20 2011"

The contents of the case: Three (3) DVDs, one keyboard layout card and of course the access code for the game (not in the picture).

Hi folks, I apologize for the delay in updates on this issue, but as I mentioned before, we needed time to gather data and put all of our information together in one digestible format.

We just finished editing a document that we hope to be able to publish as a forum post here in the CS forums as early as tomorrow.

I can tell you that it's going to be a guide on optimization performance (which includes FPS) for your PCs.

We actually are investigating different possibilities for allowing you to manually patch and we are working on providing the most beneficial solution.

Bottom line: There is no conspiracy. We simply received enough data for an analysis. We are definitely aware of these issues and please continue to submit your data in this thread. We'll keep everyone updated as soon as we have more information.

You are still in the first 30 days of your account, so you have not yet been charged for a subscription. Once you are charged for your next 30 days, within a week you'll receive an email letting you know that your Founder's medal is waiting for you.
